D-Link(R) 802.11n-Based Notebook Adapter Receives Tropos Networks(R) TMCX Approval for Metro Mesh Networks

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. and SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- D-Link, the end-to-end provider of computer networking solutions for consumers and business, today announced its Xtreme N(TM) Notebook Adapter (DWA-652) has met the Tropos Metro Compliant Extensions (TMCX) specification that enables Wi-Fi clients to optimize performance on metro-scale mesh networks. Tropos(R) Networks, with more than 500 customer networks deployed worldwide, is a market leader in wireless mesh network systems. According to Saar Gillai, vice president of engineering and product management for Tropos, headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., "D-Link's adapter is the only one of its kind that worked straight out of the box to meet our high standards without any modifications. It is now officially compliant with the demanding criteria for our TMCX program, and provides superior performance when used in Tropos MetroMesh(TM) networks." Unlike conventional Wi-Fi hot spots that serve a few people in relatively close proximity, Gillai said, metro-scale Wi-Fi is a different story. "It offers broadband coverage for thousands of widely varying fixed and mobile clients over tens, or even hundreds, of square miles in outdoor environments that are dense or barren, hilly or flat, and contain streets that are crooked or straight. There is no such thing as a 'standard' Wi-Fi client -- signal strength varies on different clients making the user experience variable, even from the same location, depending upon the client device being used." And, he added, "that is why it is critically important that metro-scale Wi-Fi network client connections be highly reliable." http://sev.prnewswire.com/

The Next Social Network? It's Web 2.0, And It Knows Where You Are

The Web 2.0 Summit kicks off next week here in San Francisco. Epicenter's Julie Sloane and I will be there, blogging and passing out cards (and just plain passing out). The official theme this year is "The Web's Edge," whatever that means. But based on murmurings I've read recently, I'd like to propose a less official theme: "The Socialization of Presence." I got to thinking about this after reading Chris Messina's thought-provoking blog post riffing on Google's acquisition of the social messaging service Jaiku. If you're not familiar with the news, see our coverage on Compiler. Chris' post refers to a meme started earlier this year by Web 2.0 conference co-chair Tim O'Reilly called the "Web 2.0 Address Book," a nebulous product (yet to be invented) that's basically a location-aware contact list. The idea is that all of our real social apps already exist in the form of e-mail, your phone, IM and Twitter. We just need some glue to make everything work together. http://blog.wired.com/

Ubuntu "Gutsy Gibbon" Nears Completion

The final release candidate for Ubuntu's next revision, Gutsy Gibbon, is now available for download. If all goes according to plan, there shouldn't be any more changes to Gutsy before the official release next week. If you just can’t wait to get your hands on the new Ubuntu, the release candidate should be stable enough for a trial run. I downloaded and installed a copy last night and while I’ve had some trouble connecting to the repositories, the system itself has been perfectly stable. Gutsy Gibbon has some notable new features that make it a worthwhile upgrade — there’s easier access to restricted drivers and codecs, support for WPA wifi networks out of the box, a new way to manage Firefox extensions and, my personal favorite, an easy way to create a PDF printer. The ability to print PDFs from any app is something I sorely miss when I switch from the Mac to any other OS, but Gutsy has that covered. http://blog.wired.com/
